Johnson gets his first goal as Liverpool win 4-0!

Liverpool knew that as they came into this match against Stoke City that nothing less than a victory would do and hopefully it would be an emphatic one to cancel out the damage done last week. They also had to remember that Stoke had them by the scruff of the neck last season and that the 4 points that they dropped against Stoke might have eventually cost them the league which they coincidentally lost by 4 points!

The reds couldn’t have asked for a better start as Torres shut his critics up, temporarily at least, with a goal within 6 minutes. This eased the pressure on Liverpool. However, the danger of conceding a goal of a set piece loomed large for Liverpool, what with Stoke City’s Rory Delap possessing a javelin thrower’s shoulder when it came to throw-ins.

But it was the wave after wave of attacks produced by Liverpool that paid dividends as the already impressive Glen Johnson marked his home debut with an acrobatic bicycle kick off a corner to score his first goal in red colors. With this goal, Liverpool went 2-0 up into half time.

The second half started with Torres coming on with nine stitches that held his eyebrow together. That was a result of a first half miscued header! Stoke started quite brightly in the second half and it required some heroics from Reina first to save a close to unstoppable hit by Delap and then a crucial clearance three feet from the mouth of the goal by the hero of the hour, Glen Johnson who is endearing himself to the Anfield faithful very effectively. Liverpool’s two goal cushion was retained. This also reminded me to displace Cech and Terry from my Fantasy football team for Reina and Johnson. That might help my team which is languishing close to the foot of the table — but not for long! <<<Insert evil grin here>>>

Before the end of the hour, the ever so increasingly dangerous Yossi Benayoun threaded a breathtaking pass to Glen Johnson who drew a last minute save from Stoke goalkeeper, Tomas Sorenson. Liverpool looked very much like the team that humiliated Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate last season. This prompted substitutions on the part of Stoke City — Ricardo Fuller and Liam Lawrence.

Meanwhile, a certain team from Manchester are being run ragged by a sprightly Burnley side. Yay! I hope it stays 1-0 in favor of Premier league minnows, Burnley!

With 20 minutes to go, Liverpool seemed to have taken their foot off the pedal as the game started turning luke warm. As the match seemed to gain in lethargy, Steven Gerrard had other ideas. A wonderful team effort that saw Gerrard make a brilliant turn in the box and put in a astute flick saw the hardworking Dirk Kuyt tapped the ball away for Liverpool’s third goal of the day! This was definitely the end of the match for Stoke City.

SG and Kuyt were soon withdrawn for Voronin and Riera.Voronin would certainly want to get more match time and he might just get that along with Riera over the weekend. Torres followed Gerrard and Kuyt and was replaced by youngster David Ngog as at this point the score was more or less written in stone.

In the three minutes of stoppage time Stoke looked resigned to the 3-0 defeat that they were staring at and Liverpool were quite happy to knock the ball around as this was a job well done. Of course, the fact that the certain team from Manchester lost to Burnley was a bonus. Glen Johnson was definitely the man of the match and as I poured these words into this blog, Johnson got a cross through with Ngog put away to give Liverpool a well deserved 4-0 victory! So it was an emphatic win after all!! 🙂
