Oranje too sour for english lions PART II

12 08 2009

The second half started with a different flavor as England made a flurry of changes. The hardly efficacious Beckham made way for Wright-Phillips, Heskey made way for Defoe and on came Carrick for misfiring Barry. These changes proved to be the catalyst for a comeback as Defoe made good of a long ball from Lampard to drag England back 2-1 into the game. Next it was Rooney to make way for tall and gangly Carlton Cole and James Milner came on for Ashley Young.

It was Milner who linked up with Defoe for the latter’s and England’s second goal in the 74th minute. This allowed England and Capello to breathe a little easier. It seemed to be that England would walk away with a respectable 2-2 draw from this friendly. the 82nd minute saw Carlton Cole’s towering header come close to scoring from a corner but it fell clear of the goal post. After this, the pace of the match died down except for a free kick in Holland’s favor which was fruitless.

The match ended 2-2 and England should be quite happy at the result considering the disastrous first half they had. Holland would have certain similar feelings as they had a treacherous second half!
