Liverpool wRap up Routine Rout

9 05 2009

Liverpool FC kept the pressure on Manchester Utd for at least 24 hours with a 3-0 away win at Westham Utd, the latter trying to get to Europe through a possible 7th place finish allowing them entry into the first ever UEFA Europa league next year.

Liverpool didn’t have to try too hard for this win as the ‘Hammers’, who were more likely ‘Hamsters’ for this game, had a certain soporific quality and Carragher and Reina had to constantly stave off sleeping at their posts due to any lack of action in their nook of the ground — this almost led to Carragher making a mistake but with West ham’s poor disposition today, it was to prove futile from West ham instead of being fatal.

A goal as early as the 78th SECOND from Steven Gerrard put Liverpool 1-0 up within the .. er … 80th SECOND and left the West ham supporters and players stunned. The goal was a result of an inch perfect pass from Fernando Torres, a scintillating offside breaching run by Steven Gerrard and West ham defenders being rooted to their spots. This lead was doubled through a penalty taken by Captain Fantastic Steven Gerrard after Torres was brought down in the box. Of course, full credit to Hammer’s goal keeper, Rob Green, who actually stopped the penalty but was not able to stop the rebound from being delivered coolly to the net by Gerrard.

The soporific quality of the game was obvious in the second half as the Liverpool players just had to hang on to their positions and the ball would come to them from glaring blunders from West ham. Late in the game, Torres was replaced by Ryan Babel. Although Babel seems to have lost a yard of pace this season, he was adept enough to thump home a third goal in the 83rd minute or so to give a more definitive look to the score line.

This was another 3 goals in a match for Liverpool who can’t seem to stop scoring ever since their demolition of Real Madrid a couple of months ago. However, the ball is in Manchester Utd’s court as they have two games in hand as of today and would look to take maximum points from these games.
