Liverpool clench 3-0 victory

3 05 2009

Relegation threatened Newcastle Utd did their hopes of staying in the Premier League no good as Liverpool beat them 3-0 at Anfield. This fixture usually has been a heavy scoring one with most of the goals going to Liverpool historically and the status quo was maintained through goals from Benayoun, Kuyt and a late header from substitute Lucas Leiva.

This was a game that had everything in it except Michael Owen who was left to warm the bench surprisingly! It even had a trademark red card to Joey Barton who might be looking for employment soon. It also marked the return or Steven Gerrard after a lengthy lay off and captain fantastic did have an impact on the game with an assist. Newcastle never looked to threaten and Liverpool never looked like they might break a sweat.

This win still means that Liverpool trail Manchester Utd by 3 points while the latter also possess a game in hand. With three games to go this season, the future looks more and more certain for both the teams involved in the game today — Liverpool look like they will be runners-up while Newcastle look like they will be going down.
