Liverpool go top!

4 04 2009

A lackadaisical start at Fulham was maybe a result of the midweek international fixtures that most of the players were returning from.  Off late, Fulham have been in good form as amply displayed by their vanquishing of Manchester Utd. Liverpool started with 5 in midfield with SG just behind Torres, a formula that seems to have been working well for them.

The reds got their first chance from Andrea Dossena in the 8th minute, who has been unusually revived in the last part of this season. However, Mark Schwarzer was up to the task. That was the only effort from the reds in the first quarter of an hour as Fulham were proving to be quite the handful with darting runs from Andrew Johnson and Clint Dempsey.

The match was proving to be soporific when all of a sudden, a snazzy buildup from Liverpool gave Torres his first chance of the game which was kept 0ut only by some magnificence from the ever so dependable Mark Schwarzer. Ten minutes later, a corner from Gerrard was volleyed in hard and fast by Xabi Alonso, only to be denied by the Fulham crossbar. It looked more and more like one of those games which goes on to be termed — a tale of two halves! However, and terrible two, Gerrard and Torres contrived to squeeze a goal through the resolute Fulham defense only for the goal post to come to the rescue again! AGONIZING… For Liverpool! But this was not the end of the ‘goal post to the defense’ saga. In the 37th minute it was Dossena’s turn to try and NOT score and aim for the cross bar and succeed to do so.

At the fag end of the half, Murphy was working tirelessly with the kind of inspiration that he lacked when at Liverpool. However, the half drew to a 0-0 haltwhich wasn’t very pleasing to the eye  with Liverpool’s recent impudence towards lesser teams (including Man utd and Real Madrid) non-existent!

The first 10 minutes of the second half was equally drab as Liverpool huffed and puffed but to no effect. The sleep inducing game play by both sides seemed to continue into the second half — in fact they had picked up where they had left off; it was almost like lucid dreaming!

70 minutes gone and Liverpool were playing like they were never involved in any of the pyrotechnics that caused Man utd, Real Madrid and Aston Villa a lot of misery. On the other hand, Fulham were doing what they had set out to do: stuff the defense with upto 5-6 players and not really care about going ahead unless a rare counter attack opportunity presents itself. Benayoun was introduced to inject some much needed energy into the proceedings as a draw here would effectively end Liverpool’s title challenge.

Deep into the second half, in the 80th minute, a corner provided what could be considered the best chance of the game. However, there was to be drama as there is these days associated with stoppage time and Liverpool! Yossi Benayoun was to be the trump card that Benitez played today as the Israeli international struck deep into stoppage time to clinch a 1-0 win for Liverpool! What a win this was as it propelled the reds to the top of the table and put pressure on a certain team from Manchester!

It was to be a tale of two halves which had a climactic end in the 2nd half!
