The headline says it all! Liverpool beat Man Utd 4-1 and have secured a ‘double’ over the red devils this season. Of course, this doesn’t put the former in the driving seat as far as the league is concerned but it echos the fact that Liverpool are definitely a force to reckon with and their 3rd place league position is only because of goal difference, a mere statistic.

Manchester Utd started with a blast and were ramming the Liverpool defense at regular intervals until Reina crumbled under the pressure to concede a needless penalty which was slotted home by one Christiano Ronaldo with his usual efficiency. Little did the crowd or the teams involved know that there were at least 3 more costly errors in the game and that all of them would occur in the Manchester Utd half!

First it was Fernando Torres to level the scores 1-1 after a horrendous piece of defending by the ever so omnipotent Nemanja Vidic. Then it was Steven Gerrard with a penalty on the brink of half time to take Liverpool ahead 2-1.

The second half was very similar to the first half with Manchester Utd pounding the Liverpool defence who stood as strong as they did in midweek against Real Madrid.  With Manchester Utd running out of time, Sir Alex Ferguson made a triple change by bringing on Giggs, Berbatov and Scholes — what a magnificent trio to have on  the bench! However, this was not allowed to be fruitful as Vidic felled Gerrard and got his second red card of the season; his first red card was when Liverpool beat Manchester Utd 2-1 at Anfield! The red card presented an opportunity through a free kick that Fabio Aurelio took with aplomb: A swerving free kick that Van der Saar could do little about saw Liverpool take a virtually unassailable 3-1 lead over their illustrious opponents. However, it was not over yet.

Towards the end of the game, with hardly half a dozen minutes to play, second half Liverpool substitute Andrea Dossena lobbed home a fantastic goal, his second of the week to present an impressive scoreline of 4-1. The match was brought to an end by the referee’s whistle after 3 minutes of extra time, excruciating for both sides. For Manchester Utd, this extra time kept them on the pitch for a painful 3 minutes which they would have liked to spend drowning their sorrows in the shower while for Liverpool it kept them from celebrating their win with champagne for it is not often that a team gets 4 goals at Old Trafford and in the process does a double over the much decorated Manchester Utd.

However, the season is not over yet as we are at the proverbial business end and in all likelyhood it still is Machester Utd’s season although Arsenal and Aston Villa might have a say in it!
